Manarola: the beautiful illuminated nativity scene
Manarola, 8 December 2008, 17.30 . Every year the largest nativity scene in the world created and built by Mario Andreoli, a retired railway worker is lit up. For 32 years this spectacular event has signalled the beginning of the Christmas festivities and this year it will be even more unique. The 15.000 light bulbs that depict the silhouette of more than 300 characters bringing to life the Western terraces of the hill of the Tre Croci in Manarola will be lit up by a new photovoltaic system commissioned by the Riomaggiore town council. Cinque Terre: New information at sea
The Cinque Terre National Park is looking to launch a new information campaign in the Summer of 2009 due to the growing interest in the sea and the increasing numbers of yachtsmen navigating our waters. The campaign aims to avoid accidents at sea and damage to the environment. For years the Park Authority and Marine Protected Area have been aware of the problems of the sea and have published rules and regulations for navigation and swimming in the local waters on their web site, as well as on other Park and National Marine Reserve sites. Recently photos and information have also been published on Facebook and videos on Youtube. The campaign next summer will place very visible signs and posters throughout the territory to raise the awareness of all sea users but above all that of the underwater divers, swimmers and snorkellers. The Corps of Forest Rangers guard Sciacchetrà
In the last seven years the number of local Sciacchetra' producers has more than doubled from the original 10 to the current 23. The quantity of grapes left to dry this year is equal to that of 2006 but 10,000 kilos less than that of 2007 when there was the largest quantity in seven years. The inspections by the State Corps of Forest Rangers do not include private consumption producers, therefore it is suggested to only purchase Sciacchetra' with labelling that includes the writing D.O.C, the name and place of bottling to avoid any possible fraud. The data provided by the Corps of State Forest Rangers regarding the monitoring of the 2008 grape harvest detail the censoring of 12.000 units, the measuring of more than 4.600 parcels subdivided over 340 companies with 177 visits to cellars. Ethical dressing in the Cinque Terre
In the Cinque Terre there is a growing interest in ethical dressing and fair trade, organic production. The retail outlets of the National Park offer a variety of organic clothing, natural beauty products and other personal gifts and home wares for a clientele interested in products that have an added environmental and social value. Since 2004 the Park has been buying and selling products from Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, India, Bangladesh and other poor countries from the South in an effort to improve the economical conditions of these areas by selling their products on the international market. The Park commits itself to fair and equal trade practices and promotes local production and business in favour of multinational alternatives.
